How We Can Support You

Environment

South Kerry Development Partnership provides a broad range of environmental supports to communities in South Kerry as part of its mission to foster sustainable rural development.

Through the LEADER Programme, SKDP helps local groups and enterprises access grant funding specifically targeted at the sustainable development of the rural environment. This includes support for initiatives that protect and sustainably use natural resources, enhance local biodiversity, develop community renewable energy projects, improve water management, and assist in building capacity around climate change adaptation and mitigation. Examples of eligible actions under the LEADER environmental theme include community tree planting, habitat creation, biodiversity corridors, rainwater harvesting, and renewable energy initiatives.

In addition to this, SKDP facilitates practical environmental and conservation projects through programmes like the Rural Social Scheme and Tús where participants undertake environmental maintenance work such as conserving way-marked walks, enhancing village landscapes, and caring for community green spaces. SKDP also engages directly in environmental capacity-building by supporting roles such as the UNESCO Biosphere Officer who works with local stakeholders to promote biodiversity conservation within the Kerry Biosphere Reserve and by partnering on collaborative agri-environmental projects like the ACRES agri-climate initiative and the Kerry Social Farming project, which aim to integrate sustainable land management and biodiversity enhancement on farms while engaging the wider community.

These supports help local people, community groups, landowners, and enterprises take practical action on environmental protection, climate resilience, and the sustainable use of natural resources, reinforcing SKDP’s role in building vibrant and ecologically healthy rural communities.
