Kerry Social Farming

Our Programmes Kerry Social Farming 1

Kerry Social Farming

Kerry Social Farming was founded in 2013 on principles of equality, social inclusion, voluntary community development and collaboration. The project promotes and operates social farming in Kerry as a viable option for achieving improved quality of life, greater inclusion and community networking for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, acquired brain injuries and those accessing mental health services. Kerry Social Farming is currently one of only two projects operating a voluntary model of social farming in Ireland, meaning that farmers are not paid for their time with participants.  It is a locally-led, community-based, shared service operating within our communities.
Host Farms are varied, offering a great range of farming activities to suit the needs and preferences of participants. Host farms range from suckler, beef, dairy, sheep and horticultural enterprises. Participants spend a full day or a half day each week on a host farm, working alongside the farmer. Normal farming life and activities continue while participants are present. Through the support of the host farmer, participants meet more people in the local rural community, getting to know the neighbours, other farmers and the farming family.

We are always keen to recruit new host farmers. If you think you might be interested, please get in touch – we’ll be happy to tell you more about what’s involved.
