Who are we?

The SKDP School Leaver Programme is a Section 39 HSE-funded initiative designed to support young people with a disability who have finished school and are ready to explore their next steps. Our programme is for young adults who are referred to us by the HSE Disability Team. Based in Caherciveen, Killorglin, Killarney and Kenmare we offer a wide range of opportunities to help participants thrive in their local communities. Whether you’re interested in working, training, or getting involved in local projects, we’re here to help you explore your options and build a future that suits you.

We are proud to be person-centred in every aspect, tailoring our support to each individual’s goals, interests, and pace. Your programme is developed by you with our support, the activities you engage in are chosen by you, and your week and pace are all based on what you wish to do. We are here to help and support you to achieve this.

Ultimately our goal by the end of our programme is that our participants will be active members of their community with valued social roles, be independent and ready for the next step in their life whatever that may be.

National Policies that underpin our programme:

Our programme is guided by HSE New Directions Policy, the National Framework for Person-Centred Planning, the Comprehensive Employment Strategy for People with Disabilities, the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) Act 2014, the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Our programme’s aims are:

Person – centredness: Our service provision is uniquely tailored and provided to each participant, and how it is delivered is based on you. We take the time to get to know you, help you to figure out your goals and aspirations, support you in the steps to achieve your goals. No two people’s programme provision is the exact same.

Community Inclusive: We are committed to ensuring our service provision is community-led. That means we actively promote social inclusion by helping young adults engage meaningfully in their local communities. This includes Participating in local work experiences, joining education centres and training programmes, getting involved in community initiatives like Tidy Towns and Social Farming, and connecting with local clubs, groups, and team. Our goal is to help each participant build strong community ties, develop valued social roles, and feel a true sense of belonging in their local area.

Independence: Our programme works with you to ensure your independence in any way we can. We can support you to build up your confidence in using public transport independently, support you through your Driver’s Theory Test, Driving Lessons and Driving Test as well as supporting you to drive your own vehicle independently. If you were interested in living independently, we can support you through this process.

Supporting our Participants to lead a self-directed and fulfilling life in their local communities and building strong foundations of social inclusion and active citizenship for our participants.
